Little Cupcakes for a Fiesta Espagnola

These cute little Spanish themed cupcakes were specially custom baked for the 80th birthday of a gentle señor.  I decorated them with edible rice wafer paper in the shape of the Spanish national flag bought on Amazon, as well as with some DIY cupcake toppers printed with Spanish flamenco dancers, polka dots, traditional “ventiladors” and bull face, bought at Print Your Fiesta on Etsy.  The fiesta was a hit with the Guitarrista playing their Olé Olé!!

Halloween Cupcakes

Halloween is fast approaching and for this occasion, I have learnt to make Halloween fondant decorations to use as Cupcake toppers.  You can see the process in the pictures below but before I'd like to give you a small (I promise!) history lesson on why people celebrate Halloween.  Happy reading (at your own peril..Mu-ha-ha-ha...)...

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve.

Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century including Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom as well as of Australia and New Zealand.
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win").  The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.
The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Halloween.  Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.
Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Halloween. It has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighbourhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.
The history of Halloween has evolved. The activity is popular in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and due to American cultural influence in recent years, imported through exposure to US television and other media, trick-or-treating has started to occur among children in many parts of Europe.
Part of the history of Halloween is Halloween costumes. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays goes back to the Middle Ages, and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor folk would go door to door on Hallowmas (November 1), receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2). It originated in Ireland and Britain, although similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as far south as Italy.

Now..enough of history!!! Enjoy the sugarcrafting pictures below!  You can place an order for your Halloween party here.

The Little Cupcake Lady at Golfspektakel @ Golf Club Lenzerheide

The golf tournament was organised by Hotel Kurhaus and the little cupcake lady was there as a member of Sweet-Hearts.org to sell her vanilla cream cupcakes. It was a real fun day and thank god the sun was on our side! Thank you everyone for all your donations to Sweet-Hearts.

Vanilla & Buttercream Cupcakes for Sweet-Hearts.org

I baked these sweet vanilla cupcakes for our first Sweet-Hearts.org charity event, Golfspektakel at Golf Club Lenzerheide organised by the Kurhaus Hotel, to raise funds for 3 kids in Bolivia to pay for their chemotherapy, without which they would not survive long. The idea to set up this charitable entity came from my dear friends, Carolina and Maria and I am very proud to be a member and part of it.

Sweet-Hearts.Org was founded in Switzerland in late May 2013 as a charitable association. We are a bunch of young Sweet-Hearted people dedicated to serving underprivileged children and people suffering from illnesses with the hope of helping each one of them maximize their life potential.

Our mission is to fund raise for various charity projects and organisations that are associated with social care, health care, education and community development in order to ensure disadvantaged people have access to basic care and educational opportunities.

For our fundraising activities, we, as cake lovers, organize various events around (but not limited to) the sale of sweets, cakes and pastries in Switzerland, hence the name Sweet-Hearts!

We currently work in collaboration with communities and charitable organisations across Latin America and we intend to expand to other territories where we can help.

Pictures of the event to follow shortly!!!!

All about sugar paste

Yesterday I attended a cupcake decorating workshop “All about sugar paste” in a very old restored house in Zurich and I learnt how to make leaves, flowers, roses, butterflies, baskets, etc.. with sugar paste.  The workshop was thankfully in English and organised by Alexandra and Timea from Ribizli.  Please check out their website here as they offer many classes.  I very much enjoyed working with sugar paste and I found it easy to model and shape little objects.  I am looking forward to attending their cupcake decorating workshop soon.  Classes cost around CHF 125 for ca 3 hours.
